Preparing Ahead of Anaesthesia

The health of the child is very important in association with anaesthesia. You will therefore be asked about:

  • Any illnesses now or in the past
  • Allergies
  • Medicines taken now or in the past month
  • Anaesthesia in the past and any problems
  • Anyone in the family who had problems with anaesthetics
  • Weight
  • Any loose teeth or false teeth
  • Travel sickness or sickness after anaesthetics or operations
  • Use of tobacco or vaping
  • Pregnancy
  • Any bad experiences around health care

In particular, please tell the anaesthetist if your child has or has recently had a cold or other respiratory problem. This increases the risk of complications in association with anaesthetics and the operation may need to be postponed until a later date, unless it is very urgent.
